The Upstream Battle Campaign - River Ness Social Ride

  • Velocity Cafe & Bicycle Workshop 1 Crown Avenue Inverness, Scotland, IV2 3NF United Kingdom (map)

Please book your place via Eventbrite.

Come along for a social ride, some litter surveying along the River Ness and soup at Velocity Café!

Velocity Café & Bicycle Workshop is joining forces with Keep Scotland Beautiful for their week of action for the Upstream Battle Campaign to target litter in our rivers.

Did you know that 80% of marine litter around Scotland emanates from our land and is washed into our rivers. Hundreds of volunteers diligently pick the litter of our beaches every year but what if we could stop it from being there in the first place?

Join us on a social ride from Velocity to the Hydro Ness, along the River Ness, where we will carry out a litter picking survey with the Keep Scotland Beautiful team.

We will start our ride from Velocity Café & Bicycle Workshop at 12:00 pm, making our way through Crown, through the islands and along the river path to the Hydro Ness building. If you're not feeling up to the cycle and would rather just join us for the litter surveying then please feel free to meet us at the Hydro Ness at 12:30 pm.

We will provide you with maps and forms to go and survey specific parts of the river. Working in pairs or small groups, we will have a look at 100m sections along the bank of the River Ness and report on our findings.

This will hopefully help to inform future policy by tackling litter from #Source2Sea.

We will then gather back together and cycle back to Velocity where we'll finish with a bowl of soup to warm up at the end (on us!).

Take part in the #UpstreamBattle Week of Action from 20-28 January and help tackle marine litter.

As with all outdoor activities, it is important that you attend well prepared. We recommend you check up on the weather forecast before heading out, and bring warm layers, gloves, and waterproofs even if it looks nice. Please also ensure you have something to drink and eat for the journey. We strongly recommend you wear a helmet and bring a set of charged lights - particularly at this time of year.

This event is supported by funding provided by Keep Scotland Beautiful, the Highland Community Waste Partnership and Smarter Choice, Smarter Places.

Photography: We will be taking photographs during the session for sharing on social media and reporting purposes. By signing up, you are giving consent to having your photo taken. If you are not comfortable having your photograph taken, please let us know.
