Social Ride - Canal Loop

  • Torvean Canal Bridges Scotland United Kingdom (map)

Join us on our weekly social ride to ride with a group of friendly, welcoming folk- no lycra required, and nobody ever left behind.

Meeting at Torvean for a 10am setting off time, this ride explores the while stretch of the Caledonian Canal between Loch Ness and the Beauly Firth. Starting at the twin bridges, we’ll first head north along the towpath until we reach the Beauly Firth. After a moment to enjoy the view we’ll turn around and head back along the canal again, heading all the way to the other end at Dochagarroch for a cafe stop. Fuelled up, we will return on the other side of the canal until we arrive back at the Torvean.

This route is almost entirely flat but includes a few slopes at the locks at either end. The total ride distance is approx. 20km (12miles) and will take around 2 hrs to complete with a cafe stop. You can expect an average pace of around 15km/hr (10mph) on this ride.

No booking required, but please ensure you have completed an Emergency Contact Form before your first ride with us. While our social rides are led by trained volunteers, it’s important for participants to be confident and capable independent riders.

As with all outdoor activities, it is important that you attend well prepared. We recommend you check up on the weather forecast before heading out, and bring warm layers, gloves, and waterproofs even if it looks nice. Please also ensure you have something to drink and eat for the journey. We strongly recommend you wear a helmet and bring a set of charged lights - particularly at this time of year.

You can find more information on being prepared for a ride on our Active Travel Hub Cycling pages
