We are launching a new Men’s Cycle to Health project to compliment our similar successful project that works with women. The project aims at encouraging greater participation in cycling and to improve mental health and wellbeing, physical health and overcome social isolation. Go ByCycle Outreach Worker:
Job Description
The Go By Cycle Outreach Worker is one of three people delivering Velocity’s Go ByCycle project which aims to reduce car miles and increase cycling and walking in its place. The Outreach Worker will work alongside the rest of the Go ByCycle team to establish and develop links with schools, employers and the wider community. They will have a specific role in recruiting and developing Velocity’s capacity to work with volunteers.
Details
FULL TIME – 5 days a week
Salary – £18,300 pro rata
Contract – Fixed Term to 31st March 2017
Holiday – 5.6 weeks pro rata
Duties include : Working to reduce car miles and increase the number of people cycling and walking for regular journeys by:-
- Consulting the community to understand barriers to cycling to school and work at present and use these measures to increase active travel across Inverness
- Working with 4 primary schools to reduce car miles and increase cycling and walking
- Supporting 120 employees both 1:1 and in groups to reduce car miles and increase cycling and walking
- Take a lead in developing Velocity’s capacity for volunteering, recruiting and supporting volunteers as part of this project
- Deliver Bikeability 1 and 2 training to school children to increase their confidence and ability to safely cycle on roads
- Deliver Dr Bike maintenance sessions to children and adults to teach them the basics of bike maintenance
- Support schools and employees to sign-up for the ByCycle Race, and develop creative ways to reward people for their involvement and achievement
- Set up and run ‘Bike Trains’ and ‘Walking trains’ with schools, supporting children to cycle to and from school and highlighting the best routes to do this
- Undertake regular consultation with project users to measure impact of project work and reduction in CO2 with user groups – report back to project co-ordinator
- Work with colleagues across the project to develop consistent promotion and marketing material
- Develop a system for short-term bike loans, and promote and manage the uptake of this with employees
- Ensure the project ends with a powerful legacy to continue its work beyond the scope of the project
Skills and Experience
- excellent communicator with good team working skills
- previous experience of recruiting and working with volunteers
- passionate about cycling and the benefits it brings
- good at engaging positively with a wide range of people and a good track record of doing this
- able to monitor effectiveness of services offered and tailor this to the needs of the people involved
- well organised
- computer literate
- cycle trainer qualification or equivalent, or a willingness to complete this award
- full clean license (desirable)

Men’s Cycle to Health Facilitator:
Job Description
Plan and deliver a programme to promote men’s positive mental wellbing though cycling in groups with the aim of increasing mental wellbeing and increasing the frequency or amount that the participants cycle. The project is aimed at men going through poor mental health, feelings of isolation or low mood. Velocity currently delivers a Women’s Cycle to Health project on which this project will be based.
Details
Hours – 23 hours per week (2 days at 7 hours, one evening a week and alternate Saturday or Sunday mornings). We are recruiting for Two posts
Annual leave- 5.6 weeks pro rata
Salary – £18,300 pro rata per year
Contract – running to 30th June 2017
Duties include:
- Build, plan and deliver a robust project to engage men with mild mental health issues using bicycle riding in a group as a way to improve mental health
- Keep clear and accurate records of delivery activities, and ensure baseline and follow-up questionnaires are completed to identify behaviour change
- Stock management and maintenance – bikes, riding kit, tool kit, garage
- Distribution of promotional materials and course handouts for participants
- Engage with stakeholders and partners to ensure joined-up approach to delivery
- Write monthly reports of activity for board of directors and funders
Skills and Experience
Essential:
- Good understanding of the effects of mental health and how to best support people suffering from mental health issues
- Previous experience of working positively with groups
- Experience of delivering training to groups
- Ability to liaise with external partners to ensure ongoing referrals for project
- Good project building and delivery experience
- Ability to work positively and effectively in a small team
- Ability to work to high levels of confidentiality when working with vulnerable adults/groups
- Cycle Trainer qualification or similar qualification or willingness to work towards this
Desirable
- Experience of delivering cycle training to groups, on and off public roads
- Good working knowledge of bicycles and high skill level of bike maintenance
- Driving license
